Not really related to the above links, but if Arabist readers want a good laugh, check out the NYTimes story "With a Word, Egyptians Leave It All to Fate" from 20 June. Guess what! Egyptians say "insha'allah"--a lot! Great reporting Michael Slackman, is this the first time you've left Maadi since you got to Egypt three years ago? The whole hook of "they say it more than they used to" is pretty weak, but at least you tried. What next, the revelation that Egyptians eat fuul--a lot!? You should try venturing out from behind the CAC and embassy gates more often, like maybe annually.

Fleishman's already done the fuul piece, and a damn fine load it was too. A whole rainbow of color cut up into little bits, spun in a kaleidescope and thrown down across the page like a metaphor fois gras. Whatever the hell that means.

I didn't think the Slackman piece was that bad, kind of smells like something he whipped up late one afternoon though. A three quick phone calls kind of piece. There are hotter stories out there, mind. Like this bad ass tourist with her "defamatory" video. Probably has a couple of shots of donkeys on it. "Hunt her down!" Colonel Jilaad slams his hand into the desk, "and our secrets will remain safe for another 4000 years!" But all his agents are too busy poring over student essays to make sure that Dear Leader hasn't been slighted by some kid from Qus.

And the name of the runaway American is... Suzan Tamood Dong?

I get the feeling this could take a while.
